A teenage girls experience of Shine.....
"I found out about Shine by accident. Some friends invited me to a youth club they were attending and it happened that Shine was starting the first week I turned up. I remember the youth leader had to ring my mum to get verbal consent so that I could attend! Although there were other girls from my school on the Shine course I didn't really know them but because there were fun activities to do during the Shine session I got to know them better really quickly.
Shine felt like a little sanctuary to me. We talked about everything - how we felt about ourselves and because everyone was given the opportunity to be vulnerable it made it easier to talk about myself.
My favourite activity on Shine was the drama where we had to act out good and bad behaviour in a restaurant. My group had a real laugh acting out the bad behaviour!
During one session we had to write down 10 words that described ourselves - my words were not very positive because at the time I was not feeling good about myself but this changed because everyone was so nice and didn't judge me and gave me a bit of self confidence.
Near the end of the course we all had to write down compliments for each other, which the leader then typed up and presented to each of us at the end of the meal. I still have my compliments stuck on my pinboard in my room."
